Wi-Fi Protected Setup explained

Why does WPS exist?

Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a technology created to enable easy and secure connection to a wireless network. Before it existed, users had to manually create a wireless network name (SSID), and enter their (long) security key on both the access point and client to prevent unwanted access to their Wi-Fi network. This process required the users to have basic technical knowledge of the WiFi network and the ability to make configuration changes to it. With the WPS technology, it will automatically configure a wireless network with a network name (SSID) and strong WPA data encryption and authentication with a push on the button.

WPS is designed to support various WiFi certified 802.11 products ranging from access points, wireless adapters, WiFi phones, and other consumer electronics devices.
