Wi-Fi Protected Setup explained

WPS button

WPS stands for Wi-Fi Protected Setup and is a one push setup. It is an easy way to connect a device to your Wi-Fi router. With only a push on the WPS-button you can create the connection, without using difficult to remember keys or passwords.

WPS was introduced because of the fact many wifi users were not using the security features of their routers, basicly putting their appliances partially or completely on the default settings. Creating a security risk without them knowing.

There are also a few naming variations, like OPS, which stands for One Push Setup but in essence it does exactly the same thing: connecting devices to your network, without the use of passwords with a push of the button.

Note: Some manufacturers use different names for WPS technology, like:

OPS 'One Push Setup' - Used by Sitecom.
PBC 'Push button configuration' - Mostly smart TV's from Samsung, Sony & Toshiba.
QSS 'Quick Secure Setup' - Routers from TP-Link & Netgear.
PNC 'Push 'n' Connect' & WSC 'Wi-Fi Simple Config' - Less frequently used.
